Why PDF security matters for digital signatures

A digital signature answers one question: who agreed to this. But that answer is only meaningful if there's a second guarantee sitting underneath it — that the document someone signed is the exact document you're looking at now, unchanged. That second guarantee is what PDF security actually provides, and it's easy to take for granted until you need to prove it.

Two different things people confuse

An electronic signature, in the loose everyday sense, can be as simple as typing your name into a box — legally valid in most contexts under frameworks like the U.S. ESIGN Act, but not, on its own, tamper-evident. A digital signature is a more specific, cryptographic mechanism: it uses a certificate to bind a signer's identity to the exact bytes of the document at the moment of signing. Change so much as a single character afterward, and the signature no longer validates. That distinction — evidence of intent versus cryptographic proof of integrity — is the whole reason PDF security matters for signing workflows.

The only kind of "ink" signature we still fully endorse.

What tampering actually looks like

The realistic risk isn't usually a dramatic forged signature. It's smaller and sneakier: a page swapped after signing, a number changed in a table, an appendix added after the fact. A signed PDF without integrity protection can't tell the difference between the version everyone agreed to and a version that was quietly edited afterward. A properly implemented digital signature makes any such change immediately detectable — the signature simply fails to validate, and most PDF viewers will show a visible warning rather than silently accepting the file.

How this shows up in FileEazy's e-signature flow

When a document is signed through FileEazy, we apply a certificate-based digital signature to the final PDF, not just a visual signature image layered on top. That means the resulting file is independently verifiable in standard PDF readers — you don't have to trust our platform's word for it after the fact, because the cryptographic proof travels with the document itself. Combined with an append-only audit trail of who viewed and signed what and when, it gives you two separate, mutually reinforcing forms of evidence: the platform's record, and the document's own tamper-evidence.

Neither one replaces the other. The audit trail tells the story of the signing process; the digital signature protects the artifact that came out of it. A signing workflow that only has one of these is missing half the picture.

How FileEazy helps

FileEazy's e-signature applies a certificate-based digital signature to the final PDF, not just a visual overlay, so it's independently verifiable in any standard reader. Paired with the append-only audit trail, you get both proof of intent and proof of integrity.
